The Island With a Secret
Topsail Island — the 26-mile barrier island that forms the southern coastline of Onslow County — is known today for its family-friendly beaches and laid-back atmosphere. But in the late 1940s, it was one of the most secret places in America.
The Legend of the Name
The island's name is said to come from the colonial era, when pirates would hide in the channels behind the island, waiting for merchant ships to pass. Lookouts would watch from the island for the topsails of approaching ships appearing over the horizon — hence "Topsail." Whether this story is historically accurate or not, it has become part of the island's identity.
Operation Bumblebee
In 1946, the U.S. Navy selected Topsail Island as the testing site for Operation Bumblebee, a classified program to develop ramjet-powered supersonic missiles. The island was ideal: remote, sparsely populated, and oriented so that test missiles could be fired north over the open ocean. The Navy built launch pads, tracking towers, and an assembly building on the island. Between 1946 and 1948, over 200 test missiles were launched from Topsail Island, reaching speeds of Mach 2 and laying the groundwork for the surface-to-air missile technology that would become central to Cold War defense.
From Missile Range to Beach Town
After Operation Bumblebee concluded, the Navy declared the island surplus property and the land was sold for development. The concrete observation towers from the missile program still stand today — eight of them scattered along the island, repurposed as homes, storage buildings, and even a museum. The Assembly Building, where missiles were prepared for launch, is now home to the Missiles and More Museum in Topsail Beach, which tells the story of the island's military history.
The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue
Topsail Island's other claim to fame is the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, founded in 1997. The center treats injured and sick sea turtles from along the North Carolina coast, nursing them back to health in donated above-ground swimming pools before releasing them back into the ocean. The center has treated hundreds of turtles and operates entirely on volunteer labor and donations. During nesting season, volunteers patrol the beaches nightly to protect sea turtle nests from predators and human disturbance.
Development and Preservation
Topsail Island has seen significant development since the 1960s, with the towns of North Topsail Beach, Surf City, and Topsail Beach growing into popular vacation destinations. Hurricanes — including Bertha and Fran in 1996, and Florence in 2018 — have periodically reshaped the island, destroying buildings and reminding residents of the fragile nature of barrier island living. The tension between development pressure and environmental preservation continues to shape the island's future.
